FIORENTINA AT THE EDGE OF MISSING EUROPEAN FOOTBALL

Serie A side Fiorentina are at the edge of missing out in continental action next year as they consistently fail to get the results.

After the results in the game between AC Milan and Inter in the derby dellaMadonnina, you would expect Fiorentina to get past their rivals Empoli. Yet, the Azzurri thumped them 2-1 at the StadioArtemioFranchi.

Fiorentina soon returned to the fight for Europe football with a strong performance against Inter Milan, seeing them off 5-4. Despite making the Europa League at least for the last few years, Fiorentina stands a huge chance of sitting it out next term as they lie in eight spot with few games left. The Nerazzurri they defeated are a spot above them, and their dream of the Champions League, when the season started, is 16 points away.

Other top Serie A sides like Napoli and AS Roma saw substantial investments before they could mount a challenge against Juventus. With AC Milan and Inter on that path, Fiorentina would have to tow that path to consolidate their stance in the league and in Europe.

The 2012/13 season under Coach Vincenzo Montella saw them close up the gap with the top three. Borja Valero and Alberto Acquilani combined with David Pizarro while legend Luca Toni and StevanJoveticplayed very well. However, following overall poor decisions to let Jovetic and Toni walk, and not bringing in capable replacements, the team paid the price the subsequent season.

The options are for the club management to get funding internally or go out to get foreign investors. They would need to plan for the short and long term needs of the club. There are the Milanese models Kareems Kicks to follow or they could tap into the transfer policies Napoli used. The club definitely need to sit and discuss on the way forward if they want to play continental games and challenge for the Scudetto.
